Ertl Toy Tractors In more than one respect, Ertl, long the most celebrated name in diecast toy tractors, is much like Tonka: both were founded shortly after World War II in the basements of enterprising Midwesterners. Although Ertl, also like Tonka, has produced countless toy trucks, this book focuses solely on the Iowa toymaker's true bread and butter: toy tractors produced from 1945 to present. Two hundred color photos depict Ertl's 1/16- and 1/64-scale tractors, as well as pedal tractors, up close with theater-gel backgrounds, diecast implements, and the sort of plastic injection-molded farmers and livestock with which Ertl has often packaged its tractors. Accompanying the photography is the story of how this Dyersville-based company grew by leaps and bounds, including founder Fred Ertls' first licensing of some of these companies' names and actual designs in 1945, the family-based assembly line he and his wife established in their home, Ertl's renowned commitment to quality, and the incredible detail that goes into today's precision-made scale models.
Without Limits (Full Frame, Widescreen) Steve Prefontaine was a champion's champion, holder of every American distance-running record from 2,000 to 10,000 meters. Fans elevated him to rock star status. Athletes were inspired by him. Off the track, officials mired in outdated politics got the point that activist Pre was taking the sport into a new era. The short life and fast times of the fiery Oregon distance runner form a movie that "belongs in the company of "Jim Thorpe - All American" and "Chariots Of Fire" (Jack Mathews, "Newsday"). Billy Crudup, uncannily resembling the real-life Pre, and Donald Sutherland, as coach and mentor Bill Bowerman, give strong portrayals of lives aflame with conviction. Infused with track-savvy authenticity by director Robert Towne and his co-writer Kenny Moore (Prefontaine's friend and a former world-class runner), "Without Limits" comes home a winner.
Short-line railroad - A short line is an independent railroad company that operates over a relatively short distance. Short lines generally exist for one of three reasons: to link two industries requiring rail freight together (for example, a gypsum mine and a wall board factory, or a coal mine and a power plant); to interchange revenue traffic with other, usually larger, railroads; or to operate a tourist passenger train service. Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company - ) (), commonly known as PLDT, is the largest telecommunications] company in the [[Philippines. Short Brothers - Short Brothers, almost universally referred to simply as Shorts, is a British aerospace company now based in Belfast. Shorts was the first true aviation company in the world, and was a manufacturer of flying boats during World War II. Short Back Focus - "Short back focus": the distance between the rearmost optical surface of the lens and the film (or in this case the digital sensor) is shorter than that of a normal Canon EF series lens. A shorter back focus does have some advantages when designing wide-angle lenses, but there's a limit to how short it can be in an SLR lens since it can't be so short that the SLR mirror hits it when it flips up.
