Distance Short Trucking
Jeffery the Jeep by Bill N. Dingus, Enhanced with charming full-color illustrations on every page, this is a delightful story about a little Jeep that dreams of being a fire truck. Every time he expresses his ambition he is told, "You are too small and made the wrong way". His mother first suggests Jeffery might be Post Office Jeep like his father. Then his parents send him to talk with his grandfather, who loves to reminisce about his service in World War II. Finally Jeffery goes to talk with his brother, who is totally happy just being a dune buggy. Discouraged by all the negative reaction, Jeffery sadly returns to his favorite spot overlooking the fire station. Suddenly the alarm sounds and he watches the fire trucks go only a short distance down the road and stop. Curious, he goes to see why. There he sees a forest fire, and the big trucks are having trouble trying to get up the mountainside. As Jeffery sits watching, a forest ranger asks if he will take them to the fire.
Short Back Focus - "Short back focus": the distance between the rearmost optical surface of the lens and the film (or in this case the digital sensor) is shorter than that of a normal Canon EF series lens. A shorter back focus does have some advantages when designing wide-angle lenses, but there's a limit to how short it can be in an SLR lens since it can't be so short that the SLR mirror hits it when it flips up. Short-line railroad - A short line is an independent railroad company that operates over a relatively short distance. Short lines generally exist for one of three reasons: to link two industries requiring rail freight together (for example, a gypsum mine and a wall board factory, or a coal mine and a power plant); to interchange revenue traffic with other, usually larger, railroads; or to operate a tourist passenger train service. The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner - The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner is a short story by Alan Sillitoe, as well as the name of the collection in which the story has been published. The story concerns a young man in a borstal who seeks solace in distance running.
